Two days is the first length that lets you cross the Grand Canal properly. Day one is San Marco and Rialto; day two is Dorsoduro and San Polo, which is where the paintings are.
The plan
- Day 1 — The one-day plan above, unhurried.
- Day 2, morning — The Frari and the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, which are five minutes apart and take a morning together. Buy the Chorus Pass at the Frari if you will see more churches.
- Day 2, midday — Walk down to the Zattere and along the water. It is the one long open waterfront in the city and almost nobody is on it.
- Day 2, afternoon — The Accademia, or the Peggy Guggenheim if two hours of Venetian painting is not your afternoon. They are five minutes apart.
- Day 2, evening — Campo Santa Margherita for a drink where the students are, rather than the square you paid for yesterday.
⚠️ The Accademia keeps short Monday hours and the Guggenheim closes on Tuesdays. Between them they can strand a two-day trip — check before you fix which day is which.

What this plan is built around
Not a list of sights, but the constraints: only four bridges over the Grand Canal, the market shut on Sunday and Monday, churches closed over lunch and much of Sunday morning, museums on their own weekday, a last boat back from the islands, and a tide that can put water across St Mark’s Square for a couple of hours.
